This cult classic film reminds us of some of the subtle absurdities of modern living but also entices us to participate in them playfully and not be under their control. In this dark, existentialist work, Harold is a young man from a very wealthy family who is somewhat lost and bored with life. He has a fascination with death. He attends funerals for enjoyment and one day he meets Maude, a 79 year-old odd woman who seems to be so different from all other characters in his life. He is entranced by her philosophy and love for life. They develop a strong friendship and as a result, Harold goes through a transformation or an initiation of sorts.
Memorable Quotes:
Maude: Everyone has the right to make an ass out of themselves, try to not let the world judge you too much.
Maude: Vice, virtue, it's best not to be too moral - you cheat yourself out of too much life. Aim above morality.
Harold: I haven't lived. I've died a few times.
Maude: A lot of people enjoy being dead. But they're not dead, really. They're just... backing away from life. Reach out. Take a chance. Get hurt, even! Play as well as you can.
